So what's a "skein" anyway?

At the Family Guy talk a couple of nights ago, Seth MacFarlane busted out the word "skein". Both my wife and I looked at each other like "what the ...?" Well, thanks to a Variety article that I'll post in a minute, I now know. Apparently Tak is a skein - the definition being "a TV series".
